Yortzeit & Kaddish Services
CUSTOMS AND OBSERVANCE
A Yartzeit is an opportune time to connect to our dearly departed loved ones by engaging in meaningful, spiritual acts on their behalf.
- Kaddish should be recited at all three services by the son(s) or other male family members on the eve and during the day of the Yartzeit
- Yartzeit candles (a special 24 hour candle) should be lit in each person’s home on the eve of the Yartzeit. On Fridays, the candle must be lit before sundown and on Saturdays, after darkness.
- It is customary toincrease learning and tzedaka (charity) on this day.
- Those saying Kaddish are generally called to the Torah on the Shabbat preceding the Yartzeit (and on the day of the Yartzeit if it occurs on a day when the Torah is read).
